Evansville, Indiana Re-Roofing
What is Re-Roofing – and Is It Worth It?
Re-roofing is an alternative to completely removing and replacing an existing roof. Generally, re-roofing is meant for roofs that are nearing the end of their life, but are still in good condition.
Re-roofing is the process of layering one set of new shingles over a set of existing shingles, and can only be done once. While re-roofing can seem like a cost and time saver, it isn’t worth it. And we’ll tell you why.
Disadvantages of Re-Roofing
With re-roofing, most of your roof’s layers remain intact and are reused. However,re-roofing often only covers existing problems, instead of fixing them.
The disadvantages of re-roofing outweigh the advantages.
Below are several disadvantages of re-roofing:
- Since shingles aren’t removed, your contractor cannot see what shape your decking is in, so re-roofing often only covers problems instead of fixing them
- The extra weight of an additional layer of shingles can further damage your roof
- Your existing shingles have to be 3-tab shingles. Re-roofing over dimensional shingles is not doable. Should you re-roof over dimensional shingles, all new shingle warranties are voided.
- Re-roofing doesn’t last nearly as long as a roof replacement, and won’t save you any money in the long run.
Roof Replacement is the Best Return on Investment
Re-roofing is a lot like sticking a piece of tape on a problem and hoping it goes away. If you choose to re-roof; you risk causing more problems than you had before. Overtime; you’ll spend more on your roof than you would with a roof replacement. At A&A Roofing, we focus on roof replacements that are structurally sound, durable, and covered under warranty.
